If I’d Only Known

April 15, 2015 By Barbara Mencer

When I finally get some time, I’m going to __________.

What? What will you do? Fill in the blank.

Okay, may I be blunt?

There are some things that shouldn’t be in that space … things that tell me you’re just asking for trouble. And yet, a large percentage of the population might very well say these very things.

An Automatic “No”

March 9, 2015 By Denise Hedges

I have to tell one on myself.

I noticed recently that my response to suggested changes in the way we were doing things or plans we had in place had become an automatic no.

The Imperfectly Balanced Life

February 19, 2015 By Barbara Mencer

There’s really no such thing as a balanced life, at least not a perfectly balanced one.

And what’s more, you wouldn’t want one. And you know what? I’ll go one step further. A balanced life isn’t for everybody.

What?!!!

Seeking Validation

January 12, 2015 By Denise Hedges

Let me ask you a personal question.

What do you have to do to prove yourself in this life? What’s required of you?

Do you have to behave a certain way? Do you have to accomplish something notable?

Slowin’ Your Roll With A 3 Year Old

December 15, 2014 By Barbara Mencer

Little kids say some funny things. And sometimes, our little ones say some really profound things without even knowing it. My grandson said something last week that really got to me.

Admire It Back

November 17, 2014 By Denise Hedges

When my partner Tom’s brother, Jim, was just a little guy, their mother told him about the tradition of certain Native American tribes.

If someone admires something of yours, it was considered the gracious and generous thing to do to give it to them.

She’d related the information as an interesting bit of information without really thinking what effect it might have on a five year old.

It wasn’t good.

Let Me Tell You A Story

November 3, 2014 By Barbara Mencer

Remember bedtime when you were three?  What did you want?

You wanted to hear a story.

And now that you’re an adult, what’s changed?

Nothing.  Stories still capture our attention.

Thank You Robin Williams

September 8, 2014 By Denise Hedges

Please, don’t worry so much. Because in the end, none of us have very long on this Earth. Life is fleeting. And if you’re ever distressed, cast your eyes to the summer sky when the stars are strung across the velvety night. And when a shooting star streaks through the blackness, turning night into day, make a wish, and think of me. Make your life spectacular.

– Robin Williams from the movie Jack

The Original American Dream

August 11, 2014 By Barbara Mencer

Do you know what it was … the original American dream?  I had no idea myself until I read an article recently from financial writer, Chris Mayer.

It seems the phrase was coined by a guy named James Truslow Adams in 1930, and the dream wasn’t about getting ahead and having the house and car and boundless opportunity in the land of the free.

Fast Takes Longer …

July 8, 2014 By Denise Hedges

Business Breakthrough Institute

Fumbling.  Bumbling.

That’s what happens when you try to go fast, and instead of gaining an advantage, you wind up in worse shape than if you’d taken your time.

Choosing Happy

June 12, 2014 By Barbara Mencer

We all want to be happy.  Then, why are so many of us not as happy as we could be or just plain unhappy?

Is it because things haven’t worked out for us the way we’d hoped … or is it because we’re not consciously choosing to be happy?

Make It A Game, Not A Contest

May 29, 2014 By Denise Hedges

Let’s say you want something.  You get 89% of what you asked for.  How would you feel?

Pleased?  Upset?  Which would you focus on?  The 89% you gained or the 11% you came up short?

I know it depends on the circumstances and how attached you are to reaching your original goal.

In my case, I was very attached.  I wanted to lose weight … 83 pounds to be exact.

Babies On The Beach

May 12, 2014 By Denise Hedges

They’re so cute and so funny.

We just took a trip to Charleston on the South Carolina coast, spending several days on the beach at Sullivan’s Island.

And if you get there around mid-morning, there are lots of little ones on the beach … from tiny babies to toddlers.

It’s really the highlight of a day on the beach to watch them in their little bathing suits with their pudgy arms and legs and sunhats.

Livin’ and Dyin’ … Lessons From My Kitty

March 13, 2014 By Denise Hedges

Our sweet kitty cat, Tootsie, died on February 7. She was 18.

I still “see” her everywhere around the house.  She was my constant companion for as long as I’ve lived here.  I got her from the pound when she was just a baby kitten.  She was the loudest one of the litter, mewing constantly, trying to climb up the cage, insisting that I take her home.

I did.  She fit in my hand.
